Decoherence is a light- and sound artwork that explores the impact of biodiversity loss on the relationship between humans and nature through abstract rhythm. The piece draws its name from the concept in quantum physics where a system’s coherence breaks down due to interaction with its environment - mirroring the way biodiversity diminishes as human activity accelerates the current extinction wave.

Each light in the artwork functions as an independent yet interconnected system, where rhythmic impulses represent the pulse of life. Initially, the impulses appear harmonious, reflecting the natural balance of ecosystems. However, as extinction data depicting biodiversity loss unfolds, the rhythms begin to fragment, become irregular, and eventually fade, symbolizing the collapse of ecosystems.

The rhythm patterns are driven by data representing the accelerating extinction rates, where the daily loss of species alters the impulses' tempo, intensity, and coordination. As the lights lose synchronization, the viewer is confronted with the aesthetic beauty of deconstruction juxtaposed with the unsettling reality it represents. Decoherence does not merely aim to visualize biodiversity loss but invites the viewer to reflect on its broader implications for humanity’s existence.
